HACKLES - CYCLING SAFETY JACKET

Cycling safety jacket design inspired by nature

Biomimicry: Term coined by Janine Benyus. A method that mirrors nature’s time tested strategies to create sustainable solutions.

There is increasing concern for the safety of cyclists on our streets. Safety clothing can be a barrier to cycling as it is often deemed uncool and the hi-vis aesthetic makes it appear dangerous. There is a big gap in the market for affordable, fashionable safety clothing.

I wanted to create a playful and innovative piece.

Using biomimicry thinking I focused on how animals communicate. The concept fitted poetically too, as people are riding the streets ‘with their hackles up’.

The jacket is designed to become reflective when the cyclist moves forwards - the faster you go, the safer you are! I loved this project - designing 3D on a movable form.
